A massive 3.6GW floating offshore wind project in the UK North Sea has taken a significant step forward by submitting its consent application to the Scottish government.

The Ossian floating wind farm, a joint venture between SSE Renewables, Marubeni Corporation, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, aims to become one of the largest floating offshore wind farms globally.

Once operational, Ossian could generate enough green energy to power up to six million homes annually.

Rich Morris, the development lead, stated, “We have submitted a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment report to the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate and are committed to engaging with the statutory consultees and the wider stakeholder community.”

This submission supports the timely delivery of the UK’s largest floating offshore wind farm, aligning with ongoing grid reforms and the National Grid ESO’s new ‘first ready, first connected’ model.

The project has undergone extensive consultation and investigation over the past three years to assess its 858km² site, located 84km off the Aberdeenshire coast.

This comes as the Scottish government recently approved the Green Volt project, a 560MW floating offshore wind farm aimed at decarbonizing North Sea oil and gas operations.
